If Latin culture is known for anything, it’s known for making food with love. Growing up, my stepmom used to marinate our carne asada in what she called “mojo” juice (she pronounced it Mo-joe). I never knew what was in it or why she called it that; I just knew it made the meat so tender and full of flavor. As we enjoyed the juicy and savory beef, the house smelled and felt full of love. After we lost our stepmom to cancer, I thought I would never experience those warm, love-filled weekends when I would visit her and my Dad. Then I found the perfect place for tasty food made with love at Bodega in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Lechon Made with Love at Bodega
Have you ever heard of a place that serves up the best Lechon you’ll ever eat? It’s true, Bodega is a special place, not just because of the rave reviews they’ve received from food critics and locals alike but because, for me, it sparked up nostalgia. It’s more than just tasty food here; It’s a feeling of food made with love. You can taste it in everything they do.
Located in the bustling Edge District, Bodega has gotten rave reviews from food critics and locals alike for its delicious selection of Latin American dishes and its famous Lechon sandwich made with Cuban-style roasted pork, garlic mojo, grilled onions, and cilantro.
Serving up Nostalgia and Sandwiches
On my first bite of the Lechon, I could taste the mojo instantly and was immediately transported back to a weekend at Dad’s, where my stepmom was marinated steak with “mojo” juice. I know now mojo juice wasn’t just a fun name she came up with, “Mojo” (rightfully pronounced Mo-ho) is an actual marinade used to flavor meats such as steak and pork. It’s this garlic citrus sauce with orange juice, garlic, lime juice, olive oil, oregano, and cumin.
While savoring the delectably tender and flavorful pork, I took a second. I could feel my eyes well up because of the instant connection between this flavorsome and tangy dish and weekends spent enjoying good food with family. Can you believe a sandwich took me right back to those moments? It did, and it was perfect.
