There’s nothing quite like trading LA’s chaos for the breezy bliss of Los Cabos, especially when there’s a Day of the Dead celebration waiting on the other side. Hacienda del Mar, with its sun-soaked charm and rich Mexican essence, sets the stage for an unforgettable (and much-needed) escape. I mean, where better to dive headfirst into the magic of Día de los Muertos than at a resort that practically whispers, “Welcome to the heart of Day of the Dead”? The moment you arrive, you know you’re in the right place.
Why Hacienda Del Mar? Because LA Traffic Doesn’t Offer Margaritas
Nestled along Los Cabos’ turquoise coastline, the resort feels like stepping into a postcard—lush gardens, swaying palms, and ocean views that could make anyone jealous. It’s luxury with a heartbeat, and for someone who’s equal parts bougie and down-to-earth, it was chef’s kiss. Its sprawling grounds tell a story of tradition, Mexican heritage, and memorable cultural experiences through fine dining.
First Impressions: Welcome Drinks and Welcome Traditions
From the moment I arrived, Hacienda del Mar rolled out the welcome mat. You truly feel like you’re a VIP when you come through the doors. As a cheery staff member checked me in, I spotted the grand Day of the Dead altar just outside the lobby.
The altar, or ofrenda, is the focus of the festivities and it was beautiful. It was a riot of vibrant marigolds, flickering candles, and photos of loved ones—like a memory lane but made festive. It only drove my excitement for the festivities to come. I was already in bliss but knew it was just the beginning.
Delight and Decompress Hacienda del Mar
After taking a moment to enjoy the grounds, a beautiful and spacious room awaits. And what would an escape be without an amazing sanctuary to retreat to? The vibes in this room scream, “Girl, you’re on vacation!” And I was truly amazed by the experience. Light and airy, clean and cozy. Every detail of the hotel side of this resort is luxurious and let’s be honest, there’s no such thing as “too big” when it comes to luxury solo travel. I love that the hotel is lively with plenty of activities but I was happy that the rooms are quiet, serene, and feel like a true getaway.
Celebrating the Day of the Dead: A Rich Cultural Tradition
After a great night’s sleep in a retreat fit for royalty, it’s time for the Day of the Dead festival. Day of the Dead symbolizes the connection between the living and those who have passed on. With many choices to celebrate Day of the Dead in Los Cabos, Hacienda del Mar does it best.
The festivities here are next level. The entire hotel buzzes with life in preparation to honor those in the afterlife. It’s beautiful to witness the preparation. The celebration is a fusion of tradition made of dancing, candles, a group walk through the festivities, and modern takes on cocktails that even our ancestors would love. All against the backdrop of the Sea of Cortez and swaying palm trees.
Dancing with Spirits (Literally)
The resort’s evening celebration was straight out of a dream. Think live mariachi bands, twirling dancers in traditional dresses, and a community vibe that felt like family—even if you came solo, like yours truly. What really struck me was the joy. Día de los Muertos isn’t a somber memorial at all, it’s a fun and vibrant celebration of life, love, and the bonds that transcend time.
With many faces painted like sugar skulls, I walked with the crowd through the celebration with a cocktail in hand and joined in the dancing and singing. Somewhere between my sweet dance moves and the cool ocean breeze, I felt the spirit of loved ones no longer here smiling down on me.
Beyond Tacos and Tequila (But Yes, There Were Tacos)
After the festivities, the celebration continues. Whether here for Day of the Dead or not, do not, under any circumstances, miss the tacos, the ceviche, or the tequila. Don’t miss any of it is what I’m saying. Hacienda del Mar knows how to feed a girl’s soul. With so many options for dining, whether you want a more intimate sit-down dinner or bar food while you swim at any one of their pools, it’s all next level.
Food is a specialty at Hacienda del Mar but so are their drinks. And while tequila is the star for so many drinks, their smoky mezcal cocktails might just steal the show. Of course, you can’t forget the champagne and prosecco. They flow everywhere here. Even at the breakfast buffet. You can order as much as you want and no one’s judging you because vacation champagne is just different.
At this resort, there’s every type of food you could ask for all within reach but of course, Mexican food is the way to go because it tastes like my grandma cooked everything. Fresh and homemade, every bite is a special taste of Mexico.
Why You Should Go
Hacienda del Mar during Day of the Dead and beyond is an experience that fills your heart and spirit. If you go with the intent to honor loved ones or are just looking for an unforgettable escape, this is where tradition and luxury collide. I couldn’t have been more amazed. I’ve never celebrated before but now, I’ll make it a point to celebrate yearly and not just on Day of the Dead.
So pack your sunscreen and your appetite. Trust me, Hacienda del Mar’s Day of the Dead is worth it.
